Rhode Island benefits greatly from its location; many transportation options exist to connect the Ocean State to other New England states, New York, and eastern Canada. Rhode Island is served by Interstates 95, 195, and 295. Other important routes include Routes 146, 136, 114, 138, and US Route 6, among others.

Rhode Island offers several options for air travel. Rhode Island’s principal airport is T. F. Green Airport (PVD) in Warwick. Logan International Airport (BOS) in Boston, Massachusetts, is within an hour’s travel of Rhode Island. Other general aviation airports within the Ocean State include Block Island Airport (BID), Newport State Airport (UUU) in Middletown, and North Central Airport (SFZ) in Lincoln.

Rail travel through the Ocean State is provided by Amtrak. Amtrak’s Acela Express connects Boston, Massachusetts with Washington, D.C., and includes high speed service to Rhode Island with a stop in Providence.

Rhode Island offers reliable public transportation for commuters. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) in Providence serves 38 of 39 Rhode Island communities, and offers a fleet of 241 fixed route buses, 135 paratransit vans, and 17 flex vans, in addition to providing seasonal ferry service between Providence and Newport. Providence is connected to Boston’s transit options via the Commuter Rail of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

Ferries provide water transportation options in Rhode Island. Notable ferry operators include Block Island Ferry, providing year round passenger and vehicle service in addition to seasonal routes; the James town and Newport Ferry, with seasonal passenger service; the RIPTA ferry service; and the Rhode Island to Martha’s Vineyard Fast Ferry, providing high-speed catamaran service between Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard.

Intercity bus travel through Rhode Island is provided by Peter Pan Bus Lines and Greyhound Lines.
